Perspective: Telephoto Effect

Telephoto Effect

The only difference in these 2 images is that one was taken with a normal lens (left) and the other with a long lens. The subject is standing in the same place (50 feet from house), and the camera also remained at the same spot.

The result is...

  • The normal lens gives greater perspective between the subject and house.
  • There is no or very little perspective when using a long lens.
  • The subjects hight is (almost) the same in both.

A zoom lens was used to replicate a normal and long lens.

Lens sharpness and level of acceptable focus.

Lens Sharpness

The lens is the sharpest when using f stops in the middle range. All of these would be considered to be in focus.

The lettering is about 1.5 inches long. Taken at 10 feet using a normal lens. Normally there is a slight improvement in sharpness at f11.

Cone of Confusion: large aperture

The beams on the outer edges of the lens

  • Sometimes don't hit exactly where they should.
  • Create a circle instead of a sharp point.

Diffraction: small aperture

Diffraction

Light beams passing through a small orifice diverge and interfere with each other blurring the overall image.
